Curb Appeal Starts in the Garden: How to Make Your Garden Sell Your Home

The old saying, first impressions count, is arguably no more applicable than in a house sale. It’s especially true if you want your house to appeal to random people who may just be passing by. If it looks like a dilapidated wasteland, it’s unlikely that anyone going to care that there’s a For Sale sign outside.

You may have heard of curb appeal before. It refers to how good your house looks to those viewing it from the road. To win people over at first glance, you’ll need an attractive front garden.

Why Curb Appeal Matters

Let’s face it, nobody wants to live in an ugly rundown building. It’s just not what they envisage when they imagine themselves buying their dream home. It’s got to be aesthetically pleasing, and something people would be proud to own. That’s why curb appeal is going to have an impact on the valuation of your house.

When you put your house up for sale to cash home buyers, they want to know that they’ll be able to flip the property quickly. Sure, they’ll give you a cash offer in minutes and the money within seven days, but they might then spend a long time trying to sell it on. If you can show to them that the house is desirable and will attract people easily, they will be tempted to come in with a higher offer.

Keep It Simple and Tidy

A lot of gardeners will agree that it’s wise to keep things simple and tidy with the front lawn. The back garden is where you can get extravagant, but the place that’s on display should be clean and low maintenance. After all, you don’t want potential buyers worrying about all the extra gardening work they may have to do if they move in.

This means pruning the plants and pulling weeds as soon as they emerge. Keep the walkways and patios uncluttered to give them as fresh a look as possible. It has to feel easy to maintain, but it should also add character to the house. This could be done by including some seasonal flowers and plants to bring a bit of colour to the table. Bright marigolds and petunias are great in the summer, but you may want some chrysanthemums or pansies to give off a warmer feel in the autumn.

Create Defined Spaces

Another great idea is to create specific spaces in the garden that can allow people to imagine what they’d do in them. A couple of chairs and a table on the patio could help potential buyers dream about sitting there in the summer, sipping a crisp glass of wine.

Likewise, if you want to attract families or young couples, putting a slide and a swing in could allow people to fantasise about seeing their future family playing there.

The home sale all starts with curb appeal, and there are loads of things you can do to improve yours. Make sure you don’t go over the top, but you should take steps to help people imagine themselves living there.
